Properties of duck down as thermal insulator.

Low weight and high thermal insulation performance, a small transport volume and long service life make quality feathers still irreplaceable material. These excellent properties can be explained by the structure of feathers composed of tiny feathers that are separate but easily combine with neighboring and hold so much air on its surface. The basis of all insulation materials is the internal structure of the actual insulation. What is important is not only the spatial structure of the material, but also a way to say "trap" air mass inside the material. The insulating layer of air in the feathers is the most important air "trapped" around the surface of individual fibers. This "capture" prevents air movement and are thus significantly reduced loss of heat flow (convection). The amount of this "polapeného" the air is related to the large surface area and thus the small diameter of individual fibers. Just because it has feathers and excellent insulating properties, because the individual filaments can be thin down to 5 microns. One particle of dust feathers weighs only 1 to 4 mg. Within one kilogram down comforters need 250 000 to 1 000 000 of these particles. For comparison, human hair is about 50 to 150 microns. Indeed, the path way leading the development of new synthetic insulating materials, which try to imitate feathers. So far, however, failed to combine production technology with acceptable price and features and so feather remains indispensable.
